Rail Freight Enquiry Underway

The Rail Freight planning inquiry started 6 November in the St Albans District Council chamber and will run daily from 10am Tuesday to Friday each week for approximately eight weeks. However, between 20 - 23 November, because of the University of Hertforshire’s graduation ceremony, it is being relocated to the Dagnall Street Baptist Church.

The enquiry came to a close on the 20th December. It ended with Government inspector Andrew Phillipson received closing arguments from train operator First Capital Connect and campaign group Stop the Rail Freight Exchange (Strife), both opponents to the scheme.

Statements on behalf of St Albans District Council and Hertsmere Borough Council, which both voted against the development in February this year, were also heard.

The final decision on whether the scheme gets the go-ahead could take up to six months and will be made by Communities Minister Hazel Blears.

Speaking to the St Albans and Harpenden Review, St Albans MP Anne Main said: "We have continued to face many challenges to the Green Belt .

"The fight against the railfreight proposal has come to a head in recent months with the Planning Inspectorate's Inquiry and I understand the Inspector will probably give a verdict on this in March.

"I think that the best present in the New Year for everyone in St Albans would be for the Inspector to throw out this proposal and I hope he listens to reason and does this.
