Railfreight Terminal - have your say - URGENT

on your website and below is our alert message to fellow Societies:
We would like to bring to the attention of your Society and members the
following planning application for a strategic railfreight interchange
depot with five 20 metre high warehouses, parking for 1602 cars and 617
lorries. The applicant is Helioslough Ltd. The location will be the former
Radlett aerodrome.
St Albans District Council planning reference is 5/2009/0708.
Representation by letter or email should be made to St Albans Planning
Department by 24th June although we are advised that later correspondence
will be accepted up until noon on the day of the crucial planning meeting
on 20th July.
More details can be found on our website www.stalbanscivicsociety.com
which also has a link to the local action group, STRIFE.
This Society is supporting the community at large and the Council in
opposing this application. The reasons are:
Inappropriate development in the green belt
Pollution - noise, light, congestion.
I Impact on the local amenities and also transport infrastructure,
which is already congested.
In respect of the proposed 12 daily freightliner trains that will serve
the depot, plus the 12 return empty workings we believe there is
insufficient capacity on the line for these extra services to be
accommodated without detriment to the existing busy commuter and express
services. Just as the benefits of Thameslink 2000 comes online for the
thousands of commuters and passengers from Harpenden and Radlett as well
as St Albans and other towns on the route, the opportunity for an improved
service will be compromised.
While the principle of moving more freight by rail is sound, we maintain
this depot is in the wrong place for reasons of both capacity and the
needed infrastructure works.
Could you please bring this to the attention of your members and fellow
citizens, including your MP. St Albans MP Anne Main is resolutely against
the scheme and is being most helpful. The Herts Advertiser has also set up
a campaign to oppose it.
Thank you for your consideration as we believe this is something far
bigger than just St Albans. Apologies if you are already aware of this.
